Market recap

Crypto markets experienced a significant recovery during Q3 2026, driven by bitcoin and ether, which surged 43% and 70% from their Q2 lows, respectively. This momentum likely stems from increasing optimism as regulatory frameworks for cryptocurrencies advance in Washington. As the market landscape evolves, the growing need for price discovery tools continues to accelerate expansion within the derivatives ecosystem.

Our comprehensive Single-Asset Benchmarks, Multi-Asset Indices and Volatility Indices establish a trusted data foundation that directly supports a tradable lifecycle of corresponding futures contracts, tailored to fit different capital scales and risk tolerances.

Furthermore, Q3 marked significant historical milestones for ether, including the 11-year anniversary of the Ethereum network and the five-year anniversary of Ether futures.

Sustained liquidity

Our Cryptocurrency suite demonstrated resilient momentum in Q3 2026, with an average daily volume (ADV) of 195.8K contracts and an average daily open interest (ADOI) of 197.4K contracts. This highlights sustained confidence and liquidity during all market phases.

The cryptocurrency market is always on, and the transition to 24/7 trading ensures that you maintain continuous control to manage positions and mitigate weekend risk. Whether trading larger- or Micro-sized contracts, market participants kept our around-the-clock liquidity highly active during the weekend of August 21-23, when crypto prices began to trend upward. This established a new record for 24/7 cryptocurrency trading, with participants trading 69.6K contracts, representing $554.7M in notional volume.

Expanding the benchmark ecosystem

Reliable reference rates are essential for navigating cryptocurrency markets. Our benchmarks provide the transparent pricing data required to construct and execute complex trading strategies.

Building on this multi-asset view, the debut of the CME CF Crypto Market Index and the CME CF Emerging Crypto Index on August 31 expanded available pricing data to capture distinct market segments. The CME CF Crypto Market Index provides broad exposure that includes bitcoin and ether, while the CME CF Emerging Crypto Index strictly excludes bitcoin and ether to isolate the performance of emerging cryptocurrencies. Additionally, the suite of Single-Asset Benchmarks grew with the launch of Ethena (ENA) benchmarks on August 24.

Tools for the trade

Managing your portfolio efficiently remains a core advantage of trading in a regulated marketplace. On September 14, position offsets on bitcoin and ether became available, allowing you to offset and collapse matching positions with the same expiry between larger- and Micro-sized contracts anytime during the contract lifecycle.

For navigating market movements, our Volatility suite also saw updates, with the ticker for Bitcoin Volatility futures changing from BVI to BTCV on September 30.

To further assist in spotting shifts in market structure and deploying complex options strategies, a new Cryptocurrency Options Dashboard tool now provides the transparency needed to analyze metrics like asymmetric call butterflies, helping you position for potential breakouts.
