Frequently Asked Questions

Lithium is a key material in the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries used for electric vehicles as well as other products in various industries. Growth in the electric vehicles (EVs) sector and large-scale battery storage application is driving a significant increase in demand for lithium in its various forms, which include lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide. Following the successful launch of Lithium Hydroxide futures in 2021, we launched Lithium Carbonate futures to its international client base. On August 17, 2026, we launched Lithium Carbonate options, which are settled against the Fastmarkets CIF CJK lithium carbonate price assessment.

The underlying Fastmarkets assessment tracks the spot price of battery-grade lithium carbonate basis CIF in China, Japan and South Korea, where most of the industry’s manufacturing capacity is located. With this product,  you can hedge your lithium price risk using a centrally cleared financial instrument. With both Lithium Carbonate and Lithium Hydroxide contracts available to trade, market participants can now hedge the specific lithium type they need and manage the price differential (the basis) between carbonate and hydroxide.

The contracts are cash settled, meaning you can manage your commodity price risk separately from your physical business. As a cost-efficient hedging tool, Lithium Carbonate CIF CJK (Fastmarkets) futures and options are designed to help you protect your profit margins and minimize your risk.

The Lithium Carbonate CIF CJK (Fastmarkets) futures and options contracts are available for up to 24 months forward, establishing a forward price curve and empowering market participants to execute long-term hedging strategies.

Designed for miners, battery manufacturers, automakers and merchant traders, our products serve as a central hub for price discovery, transparency and risk management. In addition, they provide  market participants with direct exposure to lithium prices – eliminating the need to manage a physical delivery.

Trades can be executed onscreen via Globex. They can also be centrally cleared through ClearPort using specialized IDB brokers, or agreed bilaterally between market participants.
