Exchange Sets Volume Records for Crude Oil and e-miNYsm Futures

NEW YORK, N.Y., March 4, 2005 — Daily trading records were set in crude oil futures, e-miNYsm crude oil, and total e-miNYsm energy futures contracts on the New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc., yesterday.

Crude oil futures daily volume totaled 355,769, breaking the record of 329,908 set on June 3, 2004.

e-miNYsm futures volume of 17,124 surpassed the previous record of 13,101 contracts set on October 28, 2004, and e-miNYsm crude oil futures volume of 16,102 contracts exceeded the previous record of 12,431 contracts set on the same day.

Exchange President James E. Newsome said, "The latest volume records demonstrate the continued interest of market participants in the Exchange's energy contracts and the importance they place on these versatile risk-management instruments."

e-miNYsm futures are traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange GLOBEX® system and cleared through the New York Mercantile Exchange clearinghouse. They are 50% of the size of the standard-sized energy futures contracts and are traded from 3:15 PM, New York time, Mondays through Thursdays, and 7:00 PM, New York time, on Sundays until 2:30 PM the following day, with breaks between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM, 2:30 PM and 3:15 PM, and 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM.
