Oliver Sloup of Blue Line Futures breaks down the latest action across the livestock markets following the holiday weekend. Live Cattle futures posted broad gains, supported by a firm wholesale boxed beef report that saw Choice cuts rise $1.30 to $377.47. Feeder Cattle futures also joined the rally, with the October contract jumping $5.30. Sloup highlights the latest Commitment of Traders data, which shows the net long position for cattle dropping to roughly 8,400 contracts—marking its smallest level in two years. Meanwhile, Lean Hog futures saw steady gains as trade volume begins rolling into the December contract. Positioning remains a key focus in hogs, with funds currently holding a net short position of nearly 35,000 contracts, sitting near record levels established in July.
