Highlights

Megacaps started strong but gave back all their gains as sellers returned while the broader market fared mostly better as the market lacked direction Friday. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.7 percent, the S&P 500 firmed 0.2 percent and the Nasdaq was flat. US Treasury yields and the dollar rose and oil prices declined.

Bargain hunting lifted megacaps and momentum stocks after days of losses but that was eclipsed as the day progressed as the same profit-taking pressures and risk aversion resumed. Information stocks ended flat after being up nearly 2 percent in early going. Consumer discretionary lagged with notable weakness in Amazon and Tesla. Energy held up best even as crude prices slipped.
