Highlights

The delayed US consumer price price report for September is the focus on Friday. The figures, due at 8:30 am ET, are expected to show a 0.4 percent increase on the month and a 0.3 percent rise for the core, with matching increases of 3.1 percent on year for total and core.

Given the blackout of official indicators due to the shutdown, attention to this report is especially keen. The question is whether it will change the picture in a meaningful way or alter expectations for rate cuts. The CBOE FedWatch tool says markets are pricing a 98 percent chance of 25 basis points at the FOMC meeting next week, and 93 percent chance of another 25 basis points at the next meeting in December. It would take a lot to alter that expectation given Fed statements pointing to employment weakness trumping inflation worries.
