Highlights

On today's limited calendar for US economic events, the minutes from the Sept. 16-17 Federal Open Market Committee meeting are due at 2 pm ET. Given the dearth of official economic data since the September meeting because of the government shutdown, and given the market's obsession with the question of whether the Fed will proceed with expected rate cuts at the October and December meetings, lots of interest in any nuggets to be gathered on the Fed's thinking at the September meeting.

Public comments from Fed officials lately have pointed to a deeply-divided board with views ranging from Governor Stephen Miran's predictably dovish stance to the views of voting FOMC member Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid who appeared to oppose more easing this week, describing monetary policy as only slightly restrictive and asserting that's the right place to be.
