Highlights

The strong likelihood of a disruptive and dispiriting government shutdown at midnight tonight remains in focus as Republicans and Democrats appear far apart on any sort of compromise to keep the government functioning. Financial markets are showing little concern so far, on the expectation a shutdown will not last long or do major damage.

One of the first notable effects in the world of Econoday will be the cancellation of the monthly employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics scheduled on Friday at 8:30 am ET. BLS announced it will shut down Tuesday night with much of the rest of the government if the shutdown occurs. It's also interesting to contemplate whether BLS in its current form will ever reopen if the Trump administration follows up on its threat to lay off significant parts of the federal workforce in the event of a shutdown. BLS already faces notable staffing shortages and has been obliged to scale back its survey data collection in ways that threaten its work.
