Highlights

Stocks faltered to end mostly weaker Tuesday with megacaps retreating after their recent strength. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.9 percent while the S&P 500 eased 0.1 percent and the Nasdaq lost 0.8 percent. US Treasury yields and oil prices rose while the dollar declined.

Meta, Nvidia and Tesla were featured megacap decliners weighing on the market and facing consolidative pressures after they helped the market reach new highs Monday at the end of Q1. Small caps outperformed Tuesday amid rotation out of big tech. Strength in United Healthcare lifted healthcare stocks and helped the Dow outperform. On the downside, Tesla was hit after Elon Musk and President Trump resumed their feud.

Comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell didn't move the market as he repeated that the economy remains healthy, that uncertainty over tariffs is keeping policy on hold, and the Fed remains data dependent. News that job openings rose in the latest month pushed bond yields higher, a negative for risk appetite.
