In economic data, US personal income and spending figures are due for release at 8:30 am ET. Expectations for income call for an increase of 0.3 percent on the month. Expectations for spending call for a gain of 0.2 percent. Core PCE prices are seen up 0.1 percent on the month and up 2.5 percent from a year ago.

Canada GDP figures for March and Q1 are also due at 8:30 am ET with expectations for the Bank of Canada policy decision next week a bit up in the air pending the outcome. Expectations for March GDP call for a muted 0.1 percent rise on the month.

Also in focus, fallout from the latest twists in the tariff saga, with President Trump's sweeping import taxes back in place pending more court rulings. The president's team is pledging they'll get their tariffs one way of another. Uncertainty reigns.
