Net purchases of Treasury bonds and notes at $123.3 billion were positive for U.S. long-term holdings by foreign accounts as were net purchases of U.S. equities of $10.4 billion and net purchases of U.S. corporate bonds at $60.4 billion. On the negative side were modest net sales of government agency bonds of $10.8 billion.
Among top foreign holders of U.S. Treasuries (long and short-term), Japanese accounts increased their holdings by $4.9 billion to $1,130.8 billion in March from $1,125.9 billion in February and $1,079.3 billion in January. The UK supplanted China as the second largest holder of U.S. Treasuries at $779.9 billion in March versus $750.3 billion in February and $740.2 in January. Chinese accounts decreased their holdings by $18.9 billion to $765.4 billion in March from $784.3 billion in February and $760.8 billion in January.
