Highlights

US consumer sentiment figures will command attention at 10 am ET Friday. Given how much consumer sentiment has fallen and how much consumer inflation expectations have risen this year, these reports remain in focus as markets track fallout from the Trump trade war. Expectations for the final April report call for sentiment at 50.5, down from 50.8 in the preliminary April report, and down from 58.0 in March and 77.2 in February. One-year inflation expectations rose to a whopping 6.7 percent in the preliminary April from an already elevated 5.0 percent in March, and compared with 3.2 percent in April 2024. If this figure gets revised up in the final April report, it will be another very nasty surprise after a string of nasty surprises in this series.
