Highlights

Markets saw a big positive mood swing after President Trump's reversal on tariffs unveiled on Wednesday. On Thursday investors are watching closely to see how promised trade talks unfold, or whether negotiations get under way with the biggest players, including China and the European Union. The question is whether the 90-day pause will hold, or what other surprises will the mercurial president spring? What about new tariffs threatened on pharma? Did tariffs on Canada and Mexico just go up by an additional 10 percent on Wednesday as part of the new 10 percent across the board reciprocal tariff? What will China do next in response to Trump's imposition of an insulting 125 percent punitive tariff?

Meanwhile, in more conventional macro news, US consumer price figures are due for release at 8:30 am ET, typically a tier one event for financial markets, but as the numbers cover March, a bit of old news for a market transfixed by tariffs. The Econoday consensus looks for CPI up 0.1 percent on the month and up 2.6 percent on the year, with core CPI up 0.3 percent and 3.0 percent.

It's also a big day for Fed speakers, starting with Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin at 8:30am ET and Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid at 10 am ET. Fed Governor Michelle Bowman has a Senate confirmation hearing at 10 am ET on her nomination to be the Fed's banking vice chair. Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee is speaking at noon ET at the Economic Club of New York, a venue that tends to generate news, and Boston Fed President Susan Collins appears at 4 pm ET.
