Industrial production was down 0.9 percent on the month in February, deteriorating from January's down revised 2.5 percent. Energy rose 4.0 percent, but was offset by declines in capital goods, intermediate goods and consumer goods which decreased by 3.3 percent, 2.0 percent and 1.9 percent respectively.

Year-over-year, output was down 2.7 percent down from January's down revised minus 0.8 percent. This was largely due to capital goods, intermediate goods, and consumer goods, which posted falls of 9.8 percent, 4.6 percent, and 2.0 percent, respectively. These offset the 7.6 percent increase in energy.

In sum, goods production declined compared to January, with output falling 0.7 percent over the last three months.

Industrial production measures the physical output of the nation's factories, mines and utilities. Construction is excluded. Approximately 4,100 companies provide data on more than 8,000 monthly flows of production.

Investors want to keep their finger on the pulse of the economy because it usually dictates how various types of investments will perform.
