Business inventories match expectations with a 0.3 percent increase in January from December. That follows an unrevised 0.2 percent month on month decrease in December. Merchant wholesaler inventories lead the way in January with a 0.8 percent increase while manufacturing inventories rise 0.1 percent and retailer inventories are flat.

Data already released point to a 0.3 percent increase for January.

Business inventories are the dollar amount of inventories held by manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. The level of inventories in relation to sales is an important indicator of the near-term direction of production activity.

Investors need to monitor the economy closely because it usually dictates how various types of investments will perform.
