The uptick in mortgage rates cut into demand for refinancing. Applications for new mortgages are essentially unchanged from the prior week after a sizeable increase in the prior week at the start of the spring homebuying season.
The fixed-rate mortgage index is 5.8 percent lower in the March 14 week. It is 15.8 percent higher than four weeks ago and 28.1 percent higher than this week last year. The adjustable-rate mortgage index is 12.4 percent lower and is 46.7 percent higher than four weeks ago and 18.4 percent higher than a year ago.
The contract rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is 6.72 percent in the current week. This is 5 basis points higher than the prior week, 21 basis points lower than four weeks ago, and 25 basis points lower than a year earlier. The contract rate for a 5-year adjustable-rate mortgage is 5.84 percent in the week. This is 3 basis points higher than the prior week, 24 basis points lower than four weeks ago, and 49 basis points lower than a year earlier. In the March 14 week, adjustable-rate mortgages accounted for 6.7 percent of mortgage applications compared to 7.2 percent in the prior week.
