Highlights

Monday is Presidents Day, a US federal holiday, which means banks, most financial markets and schools are closed. For a holiday, the calendar of Federal Reserve speakers is active, and will be the day's focus.

First up is Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker speaking on the economic outlook at 9:30 am ET at the Global Interdependence Center Central Banking Series Conference with University of the Bahamas. There will be questions and answers

Next is Fed Governor Michelle Bowman speaking on the economy and bank regulation at 10:20 am ET at the American Bankers Association Conference for Community Bankers, Phoenix, Ariz.

Finally, Fed Governor Chris Waller is scheduled at 6 pm ET to discuss the economic outlook at the University of South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

Of course, all will be awaiting the latest pronouncements from President Trump on tariffs and other immediately market-sensitive matters. On Friday, the president added imported autos to the list of items he plans to tax starting on April 2. He did not provide further details on that one. That followed his directive to his staff on Thursday to propose new tariffs to impose on imports from other countries that would respond to their their tariffs, taxes, and other trade actions the president considered unfair. Markets reacted with relief on Thursday that the so-called reciprocal tariffs would also not take effect until April.
