Fed speakers are due to appear, and the US JOLTS job openings report is due plus factory orders at 10 am ET. Investors track the JOLTS report for its reading on labor market tightness. After job openings rose to a surprising 8.098 million in November from 7.839 million in October, forecasters expect job openings pretty flat at 8.00 million in December.
Among scheduled Fed speakers, the following look most interesting: San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank President Mary Daly will participate in hybrid discussion,"The Economy 2025: the Impacts of Tariffs, Tax Cuts and Trump" before the Commonwealth Club World Affairs of California at 14:00 ET. And at 19:30 ET, Federal Reserve Vice Chair Philip Jefferson will speak on the economic outlook and monetary policy before at Lafayette College.
Fed officials have been pretty consistent in saying they are in no rush to cut rates or alter policy generally, given the range of uncertainties, in particular the impact of Trump's array of policies. The Fed's Daly repeated that line in an interview with The New York Times published Tuesday."Until we know more about scope, magnitude and timing and how those features move through the economy, then we're really doing nothing more than speculating," Daly told the Times."The easiest way for a policy mistake is to speculate."
