Highlights

Equities sagged again Thursday as the market's year-end weakness persisted into the start of 2025. Losses in heavily weighted megacaps and big technology shares depressed the major averages.

The Dow slipped 0.4 percent while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both dipped by 0.2 percent. Bond yields were mixed but mostly higher with a boost from much lower than expected weekly jobless claims. Oil prices and the dollar rallied.

Megacaps and big technology shares were mostly lower again to weigh on the major averages although chipmakers including Nvidia fared better. Tesla was a notable decliner to depress consumer discretionary shares. Other weak segments included real estate, consumer staples and materials.
