Highlights
The overall monthly drop reflected a 0.1 percent rise in domestic prices more than offset by a 0.5 percent fall in import prices. For the former, annual inflation eased from 1.7 percent to 1.5 percent and for the latter, increased slightly from minus 2.3 percent to minus 2.2 percent.
Within the CPI basket, the main area of weakness was food and non-alcoholic beverages where prices were down 0.8 percent versus November alongside household goods (minus 0.8 percent) and recreation and culture (minus 0.5 percent). Declines here were sufficient to more than offset modest gains elsewhere. As a result, core prices showed no change at 0.0 percent on the month, enough to push down the annual underlying inflation rate by two ticks to 0.7 percent.
