Retail sales in Australia rose 0.5 percent on the month in June after advancing 0.6 percent in May, with year-over-year growth picking up from 1.7 percent to 2.9 percent. With the Australian financial year ending at the end of June, officials noted that end-of-year promotions and sales events boosted sales growth"more than usual" this year, particularly on discretionary items like furniture, electrical goods and clothing.

Performance was relatively steady on a regional basis, with sales increasing at close to the national average in four of the five most populous states. Sales rose above the headline pace for department stores, clothing, and household goods, partly offset by weakness in sales for cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services.

Retail sales in June are expected to increase 0.2 percent on the month after May's stronger-than-expected 0.6 percent increase.

Retail sales measure the total receipts at stores that sell durable and nondurable goods. The Retail Business Survey covers all employing retail trade businesses who predominantly sell to households.

With consumer spending a large part of the economy, market players continually monitor spending patterns. The pattern in consumer spending is often the foremost influence on stock and bond markets.
