Highlights

The latest consumer climate index report highlights a positive shift driven by enhanced income prospects and a minor rise in purchasing power. Although the inclination to save remains unchanged, income expectations have surged by 11.5 points, reaching 19.7, the highest since October 2021. This marks a substantial 25-point increase from last year. The improved income outlook stems from a marginal dip in June's inflation rate to 2.2 percent, combined with notable wage, salary, and pension hikes, leading to real income gains for many German households.

Despite these positive income trends, German citizens remain cautious about economic recovery over the next year. The economic expectations indicator rose by 7.3 points but only offset the previous month's decline, stabilizing at 9.8 points -- the same as in May 2024. As such, today's headline index, at minus 18.4 and up 2.2 points from July, was stronger than the consensus forecast of minus 21, signaling that while income optimism prevails, broader economic sentiment remains tempered by lingering recovery challenges.

More generally, today's report lifts the German RPI and RPI-P measure to minus 1.

Market Consensus Before Announcement

After July's decline to minus 21.8 from June's minus 21.0, which was the first decline in five months, the consumer climate index in August is expected to rise back to minus 21.0.

Definition

GfK's consumer climate survey asks around 2,000 German consumers every month about their assessment of economic conditions. The questions focus on economic and income expectations and consumers' willingness to buy. Having calculated the differences between the positive and negative responses for each question the results are synthesized into a single number that reflects overall consumer expectations for the coming month.

Description

Any insight into household expenditure is vital to understanding how the economy as a whole is shaping up. The monthly correlation between the GfK consumer gauge and actual spending is not especially high but trends in the index can offer useful information about potential underlying developments in consumer behavior. As a forward looking indicator, the GfK index is one input used by analysts in the construction of their forecasts of future German retail sales.
