Highlights
Net purchases of Treasury bonds and notes at $42.2 billion contributed to the rise in U.S. long-term holdings by foreign accounts, plus net purchases of U.S. corporate bonds, at $52.9 billion and government agency bonds, at $0.8 billion. These were augmented by net purchases of U.S. equities by foreign accounts of $82.5 billion.
Among top foreign holders of U.S. Treasuries (long and short-term), Japanese accounts raised their holdings by $19.9 billion to $1,187.8 billion in March from $1,167.9 billion in February. Chinese accounts cut holdings by $7.6 billion to $767.4 billion in March from $775 billion in January.
