Highlights

Stocks advanced nearly across the board Tuesday with a boost from favorable earnings reports and declining bond yields. The Dow Jones industrial average firmed 0.7 percent, the S&P 500 gained 1.2 percent, and the Nasdaq advanced 1.6 percent.

US Treasury yields eased after weaker than expected US S&P purchasing managers reports and a well-received US Treasury 2-year note auction. Oil prices and the dollar rose.

Ongoing recovery among megacaps and growth stocks helped the market extend Monday's rebound from last week's losses. Positive earnings from industrials and consumer discretionary gave the market boost with upbeat results from big names like General Motors, UPS, Danaher, GE Aerospace and Pulte.

Other strong sectors included communications services, information technology and health care. Disappointing results from Nucor and Packaging Corp. dampened materials.
