Highlights
Net purchases of Treasury bonds and notes at $67.9 billion contributed to the rise in U.S. long-term holdings by foreign accounts, plus net purchases of U.S. corporate bonds, at $20.0 billion and government agency bonds, at $7.7 billion. These were somewhat offset by net sales of U.S. equities by foreign accounts of $15.8 billion.
Among top foreign holders of U.S. Treasuries (long and short-term), Japanese accounts raised their holdings by $14.9 billion to $1,153.1 billion in January from $1,138.2 billion in December. Chinese accounts cut holdings by $18.6 billion to $797.7 billion from $816.3 billion in December.
