Highlights
Net purchases of Treasury bonds and notes at $33.8 billion contributed to the rise in U.S. long-term holdings by foreign accounts, plus net purchases of U.S. corporate bonds, at $23.8 billion and government agency bonds, at $4.6 billion. There were also whopping net purchases of U.S. equities by foreign accounts of $79.7 billion.
Among top foreign holders of U.S. Treasuries (long and short-term), Japanese accounts raised their holdings by $10.7 billion to $1,138.2 billion in December from $1,127.5 billion in November. Chinese accounts raised holdings by an unusually large $34.3 billion to $816.3 billion from $782 billion in November.
