Highlights
Net purchases of Treasury bonds and notes at $54.0 billion contributed to the rise in U.S. long-term holdings by foreign accounts, plus net purchases of U.S. corporate bonds, at $2.8 billion and government agency bonds, at $5.9 billion. These purchases were offset by net sales of U.S. equities by foreign accounts of $78.3 billion.
Among top foreign holders of U.S. Treasuries (long and short-term), Japanese accounts raised their holdings by $11.8 billion to $1,098.2 billion in October from a revised $1,086.4 billion in September and $1,115.5 billion in August. Chinese accounts cut holdings by $8.5 billion to $769.6 billion in October from $778.1 billion in September and $805.4 billion in August.
