Highlights
Seasonally adjusted, the surplus stood at CHF2.56 billion, down from CHF3.23 billion in June and a 3-month low. The decline here was due to a 5.7 percent monthly slide in exports that more than outpaced a 3.3 percent fall in imports. At the same time, a 3.9 percent decline in export volumes and a smaller 1.8 percent decrease in their import counterpart saw the real trade surplus narrow by 18 percent. Real net exports have now deteriorated in three of the last four months, a trend that warns of a possible negative contribution to third quarter GDP growth and fresh problems for the SNB over CHF strength.
