Highlights
Net purchases of Treasury bonds and notes, at $37.5 billion contributed to the rise in U.S. long-term holdings by foreign accounts, plus net purchases of U.S. corporate bonds, at $45.4 billion and government agency bonds, at $11.3 billion. These purchases were offset somewhat by net sales of U.S. equities by foreign accounts of $34.4 billion.
Among top foreign holders of U.S. Treasuries (long and short-term), Japanese accounts decreased holdings by $30.4 billion to bring their holdings to $1.096.8 trillion in May. Chinese accounts cut holdings by $22.2 billion, bringing their holdings to $846.7 billion.
