Net purchases of Treasury bonds and notes, at $35.8 billion, contributed to the rise in U.S. long-term holdings by foreign accounts, plus net purchases of U.S. corporate bonds, at $21.8 billion, and government agency bonds, at $16.8 billion. There were heavy net purchases by foreign accounts of U.S. equities at $36.1 billion.
Among top foreign holders of U.S. Treasuries (long and short-term), Japanese accounts increased holdings by $5.9 billion to bring their holdings to $1.087.7 trillion in March. Chinese accounts added $20.5 billion, bringing their holdings to $869.3 billion.
