Highlights

Unusually mild weather in January is expected to have raised US housing starts to an annualized rate of 1.365 million from 1.382 million in December while building permits are forecast at 1.350 million, also up from 1.330 million. Starts and permits have been in steady decline. The construction industry continues dealing with worker shortages and slower demand.

Initial jobless claims for the February 16 week are expected to come in at 200,000 versus 196,000 in the prior week.

The Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index for February is forecast at minus 7.2, improving from minus 8.9 in January. It has been in a long run of contraction, although January's report did show some positives including strength in employment, easing in inflation and improvement in confidence.

It follows Wednesday's release that showed the New York Fed's Empire State manufacturing index came in much higher than expected, at minus 5.8 in February, which was up 27.1 points from minus 32.9 in January.

US producer prices are expected to show a 0.4 percent rebound on the month in January after a 0.5 percent dip in December with the year-over-year increase seen slowing to 5.5 percent from 6.2 percent. The annual core rate in January is also seen moderating to 5.0 percent from December's 5.5 percent.

Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President Loretta Mester will speak virtually before the Global Interdependence Center Ukraine: One Year Later Session I: Monetary Policy and Market Implications event in Sarasota, Fla. at 8:45 a.m. EST (1345 GMT). She will also speak in person before the Financial Executives International Northeast Ohio Chapter at 6 p.m. EST (2300 GMT).

St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard will give an in-person presentation on the U.S. economy and monetary policy before a hybrid Greater Jackson County Chamber luncheon at 1:30 p.m. EST (1830 GMT).

Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook will give welcome remarks before the Sadie Collective Research Reception at 4 p.m. EST (2100 GMT).
