Getting started with CME FSPI Sports Indexes and futures

CME FSPI Sports Indexes will be powered by FutureSports and calculated based on live, in-game metrics of teams for every event in a league’s respective season.

The indexes will follow a transparent, points-based system based on official league statistics. Positive actions (e.g., scoring, earning a favorable advantage for an individual event) add points to the index, while negative actions (e.g., opponent scoring, in-event penalties or setbacks) subtract them. It’s pure performance by teams, translated into a trackable, tradable number.

These statistically validated indexes have been developed using years of officially reported, back-tested data, all within a regulatory-approved framework.

The methodologies are designed to align with the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) Principles for Financial Benchmarks and supported by published governance, oversight and methodology change procedures. The leagues serve as official data sources and do not participate in index determination or governance.

Institutions can license real-time, historical or derived data and have it integrated into their systems, bringing real price discovery, transparency and trust to hedging and risk management.

Besides diversification, these contracts will offer multiple applications:

  • Hedge against the financial impact exposure to a team’s performance can have on your bottom line.
  • Buy and sell contracts to capture live, in-game and in-season momentum shifts.
  • Trade contracts to invest in a franchise's broader, season-long narrative.

Sports Index futures will be continuous markets financially settled to the index, offering versatile usage. For example: You can buy (go long) if you think a team will win, or sell (go short) if you anticipate a decline in team performance. Manage risk and capture real-time moves from a game’s start until time has expired, or between matchups.
