CME FSPI Sports Indexes are powered by FutureSports and calculated based on live, in-game metrics of teams for every event in a league’s respective season. Each index starts from a standardized base value of 7,500 prior to the start of each season, and moves up or down based on officially reported statistics from every game.
The indexes follow a transparent, points-based system based on official league statistics. Positive actions (e.g., scoring, earning a favorable advantage for an individual event) add points to the index, while negative actions (e.g., opponent scoring, in-event penalties or setbacks) subtract them. It’s pure performance by teams, translated into a trackable, tradable number.
These statistically validated indexes have been developed using years of officially reported, back-tested data, all within a CFTC-regulated framework.
The methodologies are designed to align with the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) Principles for Financial Benchmarks and supported by published governance, oversight and methodology change procedures. The leagues serve as official data sources and do not participate in index determination or governance.
The underlying sports indexes and their corresponding futures contracts serve distinct, complementary roles within a trading strategy, including:
- Indexes act as the valuation benchmark, reflecting underlying team performance data. Market participants use these figures to analyze trends, run quantitative models, establish baseline values and track historical metrics.
- Futures contracts allow market participants to trade long or short positions based on expected index movements, enabling position management, exposure hedging or tactical allocation.
Using both the indexes and futures contracts allows participants to build data-driven strategies around official benchmark levels and execute those views with clear pricing, margin efficiency and centralized clearing.

FutureSports Performance Indexes (“FSPI”) licenses CME to use various Sports League and Team Financial Indices (CME FSPI League Team Indices) in connection with trading futures contracts and options on futures contracts based upon such indices. FSPI and the Leagues (the source of the data on which the indices are calculated) shall have no liability for any damages, claims, losses or expenses caused by any errors or delays in calculating or disseminating the source data or the FSPI League Team Indices. FSPI, the Leagues, and their respective affiliates do not guarantee the accuracy or completeness of the CME FSPI League Team Indices or any data included therein. FSPI and the Leagues make no warranty, express or implied, as to the results to be obtained by any person or any entity from the use of the CME FSPI League Team Indices or any data included therein in connection with the trading of futures contracts, options on futures contracts or any other financial product or use based on or referencing futures contracts or the indices. The Index Data is made available to you solely for your internal educational purposes related to the CME FSPI League Team Indexes. The inclusion of League and Team names or logos in the name of CME FSPI League Team Indexes is solely for identification purposes.
