About Rainfall Futures, Options and Binary Options
The amount of rain that falls affects the profitability of many different industries. To meet the need for a risk management tool for rain, CME Group offers Rainfall futures, options on futures and binary options on a number of cities in the United States. These are the first rainfall index contracts using centrally cleared contracts and they enable businesses of all types to manage the financial risk of too much or too little rainfall.
How Rainfall Contracts Work
The CME Rainfall Index provides average monthly rainfall information for designated cities in the United States. People who wish to trade rainfall futures or options determine what amount of rainfall would be detrimental to their businesses and take futures or options positions based on that determination.
Rainfall Defined
Daily rainfall is defined as the total rainfall recorded at a particular location between 12:01 a.m and 12:00 midnight as reported by MDA Information Systems, Inc. Monthly rainfall is defined as the sum of daily rainfall values for a particular location for a calendar month. The accumulation period for each contract begins with the first calendar day of the contract month and ends with the last calendar day of the contract month.
