Expansion of NYMEX Product Codes, Decommission of Standard SPAN Files
Please be advised that NYMEX is planning to expand the list of possible product codes to 1-5 characters, alpha-numeric. Currently, all NYMEX cleared products on the NYMEX/COMEX/DME Exchanges have product codes that are two-character alpha (e.g., CL). It is expected that initially 1-3 character alpha-numeric codes will be used, but recipients of NYMEX data are asked to support up to five-character codes for future implementation.

Please note that existing product codes will not be changed as part of this initiative.

Effective JUNE 2, 2008, the following changes will be made to support 1-5 alpha-numeric character product codes.

SPAN Standard Format parameter files to be decommissioned:

The SPAN Parameter files in Standard Format can only support two-digit product codes. The Expanded Format SPAN files, already implemented for NYMEX/COMEX, can support up to a ten-digit product code. As such, the SPAN Standard Format parameter files will be decommissioned as of JUNE 2, 2008. (The last file will be created for the May 30, 2008, trade date.) All users of the Standard SPAN files must migrate to the Expanded SPAN Files before this date.

The layout of the records for the SPAN Expanded Format parameter file can be found at:

Settlement Downloads
The "Exchange-Wide Market Data" Settlement Data text format files on NYMEX.com (http://www.nymex.com/md_ewd.aspx) will have their spacing modified to accommodate 5-character product codes. Since these text files are sometimes input in client systems, clients should expect the layout to be changed for the three extra spaces needed for the product code.

NYMEX system screens and printed reports:
Various NYMEX system screens and reports will be modified to allow for 1-5 digit alpha-numeric product codes. Users of NYMEX systems and recipients of reports may notice aesthetic changes necessary for the additional space to support up to 5 characters.
