Calendar Spread Options
The board of directors of New York Mercantile Exchange, Inc., on Wednesday August 1, 2001, voted to introduce calendar spread options for trading starting September 21, 2001.

Both Brent and light, sweet crude oil calendar spread options contracts will launch on Friday, September 21, 2001, followed by natural gas and heating oil calendar spread options on Friday, October 5, 2001, and unleaded gasoline calendar spread options on Friday, October 12, 2001.

A calendar spread option is an options contract based on the spread between two months of the same commodity. They are similar in concept to the crack spread options contracts introduced in 1994 - with a key difference being that crack spread options are inter-commodity based on the same contract month as opposed to calendar spread options which are intra-commodity based on different contract months. Contracts will be available for any combination of the first four months in each commodity, as well as the closest June/December and December/December spreads for the two crude oil contracts.

At exercise, the buyer of a put options contract will receive a short position in the futures market for the closer month and a long position in the futures market for the further month. The buyer of a call options will receive the reverse at exercise.

Trading hours will mirror open outcry trading hours for the underlying futures contracts.

Calendar spread options will be presented as multiple commodity codes to specify the spread between months. Only the first month will be specified and the second month will be implied as an offset from the first month defined through the commodity code. For example (pending approval by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission of the codes listed below), for light, sweet crude oil calendar spread options, WA will imply a one month spread between contracts, WB will imply 2 months between contracts, WC will imply 3 months between contracts. Therefore, WBG01 (G=February) would represent a Feb 01 - April 01 light, sweet crude oil calendar spread option.

The contract description for calendar spread options will look exactly like a standard contract symbol: XXMYY where XX is the contract symbol, M is the month, and YY is the year.
