Key Takeaways with Craig
As we begin the second quarter of 2022, US Equities were higher as were commodity futures prices at CME Group. US Treasury yields were little changed today and the 2 Year vs 10 Year spread remains inverted (the 2-Year Treasury continues to trade with a greater yield than the 10-Year).
We figured it was a good time to assess where current implied volatility is trading versus where it was at this time of year over the last several years. Using QuikStrike data, we created the following graphs that depict currently implied volatility in some of CME Group’s major products (dotted red line) versus the years since 2015, with days to expiration on the horizontal axis.
As you can see, with the exception of outlier figures during the pandemic-driven volatility in 2020, current implied volatility in many of these products is still trading at or near the highs we’ve seen since 2015. The only exception is in the Euro FX in which implied volatility has normalized since early last month.
So, as we move into the second quarter, although implied volatility has come down from recent highs, these graphs suggest that there is still a fair amount of uncertainty in many CME Group markets and we’ll be here reporting on the action.

Neither futures trading nor swaps trading are suitable for all investors, and each involves the risk of loss. Due to the leveraged nature of futures trading and swaps trading, it is possible to lose more than the amount deposited in a position. Therefore, traders should not deposit more funds than they can afford to lose without negatively affecting their lifestyles. A trader cannot expect to profit on each trade, and should only devote a small amount of their available funds to each trade. All references to options refer to options on futures.
