Major stock indexes surged Wednesday as investors welcomed the lifting of uncertainty over the midterm elections and the prospect that a Democratic Congress will act as a check on President Trump's worst impulses.
The Dow Jones industrial average rallied 3.0 percent, the S&P 500 rose 1.6 percent and the Nasdaq gained 1.4 percent. Bond yields and oil prices dropped on hopes the Democratic sweep would force an end to the US-Iran war, and the dollar declined with lower bond yields.
Stocks advanced in a big risk-on move with a distinct broadening of the gains to include a wider array of sectors in addition to recent technology and AI leaders. Hyperscalers fared well in the overall updraft even as the Democratic sweep raised concern about new limits on construction of data centers, the target of popular fury propelling the political earthquake.
