Highlights

Stock indexes were narrowly mixed on Monday in holiday-thinned trading. The Dow Jones industrial average firmed 0.4 percent while the S&P 500 was off 0.1 percent and the Nasdaq fell 0.4 percent. Oil prices and the dollar rose while bonds did not trade.

Most stocks were higher but weakness in the AI trade weighed on the Nasdaq and the major averages. Risk appetite was hurt by rising oil prices as headlines from the Middle East were not helpful. Energy stocks outperformed on rising oil prices. Regional banks, food & beverage, and managed care were among the best performers. Laggards included airlines, biotech, software and homebuilders.
