The US consumer price index report is Friday's featured event. Expectations call for CPI up 0.4 percent on the month in August and up 3.4 percent on year, with a boost from energy prices. Expectations for core CPI call for increases of 0.2 percent and 2.4 percent, respectively.
Markets are watching the CPI for signs that inflation is cooling or heating up as it bears on the Federal Reserve's decision next week on whether to raise interest rates. Producer price figures on Thursday largely matched expectations but that level of ongoing inflation does not suggest any move closer to the 2 percent Fed target that Chair Kevin Warsh says the Fed must reach.
