Highlights

Major stock averages gave up early gains to end narrowly mixed Monday as a supportive decline in oil prices and bond yields was offset by a selloff in chipmakers. Most sectors improved but the heavy weighting of Nvidia and other chipmakers weighed on the averages.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.5 percent while the S&P 500 firmed 0.2 percent and the Nasdaq was down 0.2 percent. Bond yields, the dollar, and oil prices all declined.

A pause in attacks between the US and Iran sent oil prices lower as some traders bet that the impromptu ceasefire indicated better prospects for an end to the fighting. Meanwhile, semiconductors and the AI trade sold off. Best sectors included communications services, led by Alphabet. Other strong performers included consumer staples and financials.
