Highlights
Unemployment increased in the second quarter by 62,000, reaching 2.677 million unemployed and pushing the unemployment rate from 8.1 percent in the first quarter to 8.3 percent in the second quarter. That is the highest rate since the third quarter of 2020 which was during the height of the Covid pandemic.
Overall employment fell to 69.0 percent of the workforce from 69.3 during the first quarter, falling for both men – 71.3 percent versus 71.5 percent -- and women to 66.8 percent from 67.1.
The youth unemployment rate rose to 21.6 percent during the second quarter from 21.2 percent in the first to 740,000, with the employment rate dropping to 33.8 percent from 34.1 percent.
The so-called “halo” around unemployment was roughly unchanged, rising by 6,000 on the quarter to 1.9 million. These are people who are not considered unemployed because they either didn’t look for a job or were unavailable.
A methodological change took place with the starting with this report, France's official unemployment and employment figures now include the island of Mayotte. Previously it was omitted because it was measured separately. The change boosts unemployment boosts up by about 0.06 percentage.
Despite the methodological change adding to unemployment, it isn’t enough to blame it for the underlying weakness in the labor market, particularly for those between 15 and 24 years.
