Highlights
German consumer sentiment improved in August 2026, with the forward-looking consumer climate index rising by 2.8 points to minus 26.6. This represents a welcome change, supported mainly by a sharp 16.2-point increase in income expectations to 1.7, the strongest reading in six months. Economic expectations also rose for the fourth consecutive month, reaching minus 3.9, alongside modest GDP growth and improving business indicators.
Nevertheless, the recovery remains fragile and has not yet translated into stronger household spending. Willingness to buy remained almost unchanged at minus 9.8 and has stayed close to this historically weak level for approximately four years. Meanwhile, the savings indicator remained elevated at 15.5, despite declining slightly. This suggests that consumers may feel more optimistic about future earnings but remain cautious about committing to major purchases.
The widening gap between income expectations and purchasing intentions indicates that uncertainty continues to shape household behaviour. Concerns about prices, employment security and broader economic conditions may therefore be encouraging precautionary saving. Germany’s consumer outlook is improving, but a sustained consumption-led recovery will require greater confidence in household purchasing power, taking the RPI to 34 and the RPI-P to 37. This means that economic activities continue to outpace market expectations in Germany.
