Highlights

French household goods consumption increased by 0.4 percent in June 2026, extending May’s 0.3 percent revised rise. However, the improvement appears narrow and partly temporary rather than evidence of a broad recovery. Energy consumption rose by 1.4 percent, largely because record temperatures increased electricity demand, while food consumption recovered by 0.6 percent, particularly through beverage purchases.

The quarterly picture remains weaker as total goods consumption fell by 0.1 percent, although this represented an improvement from the 0.7 percent decline in the first quarter. Energy and food consumption contracted over the quarter, suggesting that higher petroleum prices and continued pressure on household budgets constrained essential expenditure. Meanwhile, engineered-goods consumption rose by 1.0 percent, indicating selective discretionary spending. Purchases of appliances and televisions, partly associated with the Football World Cup, offset weaker transport-equipment and clothing expenditure.

In summary, June’s growth reflects a reallocation of spending towards weather-related energy needs and selected durable goods, rather than a decisive strengthening of household confidence. Sustainable consumption growth will require broader improvements across food, clothing and transport expenditure.
