Highlights
The trade deficit widened in May to minus 6.928 billion euros from a revised minus 5.416 billion the month before and is the largest gap in at least a year.
Exports fell for the first time in three months, down 2.0 percent to 53.581 billion euros from 54.661 billion the month before. Imports on the other hand expanded for the fourth consecutive month, gaining 0.7 percent month-on-month to 60.509 billion euros from 60.077 billion the previous month.
The export decline was attributed to lower sales of military equipment, while outflows of mechanical, computer, and electronic equipment also declined. Modest increases for aerospace goods were not enough to offset the declines.
