Highlights

A very nasty inflation reading knocked equities down on Wednesday, which added to the risk aversion fueled by the oil price shock. The Dow dropped 1.6 percent, the S&P 500 lost 1.4 percent and the Nasdaq was down 1.5 percent. The dollar, bond yields and oil prices all advanced.

News that producer prices surged by 0.7 percent in February and by 3.4 percent on year pointed to more price pressure brewing even before the oil price shock starting in March with the US and Israeli attacks on Iran and subsequent clashes and the effective shutdown of energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The market got no relief from the Federal Reserve policy announcement leaving rates on hold, as expected. At least the Fed appears inclined to look through rising energy prices and still penciled in a rate cut this year and one in 2027.
