Highlights
UK industrial production increased by 0.2 percent in July 2026, signalling a tentative recovery following contractions of 0.2 percent in June and 0.7 percent in May. The improvement was driven principally by a 0.9 percent expansion in manufacturing and a 2.0 percent rise in water supply and sewerage output.
Manufacturing growth was relatively broad-based, with output increasing across eight of the thirteen subsectors. Computer, electronic and optical products recorded the strongest expansion at 5.2 percent, followed by basic pharmaceuticals at 3.4 percent and basic metals at 2.8 percent. This pattern suggests renewed momentum in technology-intensive, health-related and intermediate-goods industries.
Nevertheless, the recovery remained uneven. Mining and quarrying output fell sharply by 4.4 percent, while electricity and gas production declined by 1.5 percent, substantially limiting overall industrial growth.
Annual figures present a more encouraging picture. Total industrial output rose by 0.6 percent in July, reversing June’s 0.2 percent decline. Manufacturing output expanded more strongly by 2.6 percent, compared with 0.5 percent growth in June. In summary, the latest data indicate an emerging manufacturing-led recovery, although weakness in energy and extractive industries means that the wider industrial outlook remains fragile.
