Highlights

UK production output contracted by 0.2 percent in June 2026 (over the month and over the year), extending May’s sharper 0.7 percent decline over the month and indicating continued weakness across the industrial economy. The fall was broad but uneven as manufacturing decreased by 0.5 percent, water supply and sewerage by 1.5 percent, and electricity and gas by 0.3 percent.

Mining and quarrying provided a notable upsurge, rising by 5.1 percent. This improvement was largely driven by a 6.2 percent recovery in crude petroleum and natural gas extraction following May’s 5.5 percent fall. However, this rebound appears corrective rather than evidence of broad industrial expansion.

Manufacturing performance remains particularly fragile, as seven of its thirteen subsectors recorded lower output. Basic pharmaceutical production delivered the largest negative contribution, falling by 5.1 percent after modest growth in the previous two months. In summary, June’s figures portray an industrial sector that showed that energy extraction recovered strongly, but widespread manufacturing weakness restrained total production and may limit sustained economic growth.
