Highlights

Italy's seasonally adjusted industrial production fell 1.3 percent on the month in August, well short of the Econoday consensus of no change and below the bottom of the forecast range of minus 0.2 percent to 0.2 percent. July's rise was revised to 0.6 percent from 0.7 percent. Calendar-adjusted output was flat on the year, after a July reading revised to minus 0.1 percent from no change.

The monthly decline was the steepest since August 2025, when output fell 1.7 percent.

Three of the four main industrial groupings lost ground on the month. Intermediate goods fell the most, down 1.8 percent, followed by consumer goods at minus 1.2 percent and capital goods at minus 0.9 percent. Within consumer goods, a 4.9 percent jump in durables was outweighed by a 2.0 percent drop in non-durables.

Energy was the exception, rising 2.8 percent on the month and 11.5 percent on the year. That annual gain offset declines of 4.4 percent in consumer goods and 4.0 percent in intermediate goods, while capital goods rose 0.7 percent.

Manufacturing output fell 0.6 percent on the month and 1.9 percent on the year. The sharpest monthly declines were in computers and electronics, down 5.3 percent, and electrical equipment, down 4.6 percent. Pharmaceuticals rose 5.5 percent.

On the year, textiles, clothing and leather fell 14.0 percent and chemicals 11.4 percent, while transport equipment rose 1.0 percent and machinery 0.5 percent.

Electricity, gas, steam and air supply rose 3.4 percent on the month and 14.5 percent on the year.
