The seasonally adjusted trade balance came in at a surplus of 4.728 billion euros in July. Seasonally adjusted exports rose 0.3 percent from June to 57.379 billion euros, while imports fell 1.2 percent to 52.651 billion euros.

On a non-seasonally-adjusted basis, the trade balance was in surplus to the tune of 8.240 billion euros, with exports up 4.7 percent year-on-year to 64.554 billion euros and imports up 4.6 percent to 56.314 billion euros. Trade with EU27 countries produced a much narrower surplus of 1.251 billion euros, with exports up 2.7 percent and imports up 4.9 percent year-on-year. Trade with non-EU27 countries was the larger driver of the overall surplus, at 6.989 billion euros, as exports to those markets climbed 6.6 percent and imports rose a more modest 4.2 percent.

By sector, consumer goods posted the largest trade surplus at 6.797 billion euros, with exports up a slim 2.5 percent year-on-year even as imports fell 8.0 percent — consumer durables exports jumped 7.2 percent while non-durables rose 1.7 percent.

Capital goods generated a 6.692 billion euro surplus, with exports up 1.0 percent and imports up a faster 6.6 percent. Intermediate goods trade was nearly balanced, showing a modest 267 million euro surplus, as exports surged 10.0 percent year-on-year and imports rose 7.7 percent.

Energy remained the clear drag, with a deficit of 5.515 billion euros as energy imports jumped 29.7 percent year-on-year against a 19.0 percent rise in energy exports, reflecting continued reliance on imported energy supplies even as broader trade volumes strengthened.
